Computer Aided Machining Technology (340)
Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program provides state-of-the-art skills and techniques in computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) programming to enable students to practice as CAM/CNC technicians. Fundamental principles of mathematics, science, computer-aided manufacturing, CNC programming, problem solving, and communications are demonstrated. Computer-aided drafting (CAD) is an integral part of this program. Employment opportunities for the graduate include CNC Machinist, CNC Programmer, Application Programmer, CNC Operator/Programmer, CNC Programmer/Planner, and CNC Service Representative. This is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) program.

Program Competencies 

The student/graduate will be able to:

  • Write interpreted Computer Numerical Control (CNC) tool path code to control CNC equipment.
  • Generate and edit 2D and 3D tool paths through the use of CADD/CAM software.
  • Prepare and use set-up documentation to perform turning and milling operations safely on CNC centers.
  • Apply industrial and standard practices to accurately measure and record inspection data.
  • Demonstrate team working skills.

Note(s):


1   Calculus I and II (MATH 221, MATH 222) OR College Algebra (MATH101) and Trigonometry & Functions (MATH102) may be substituted for Technical Mathematics I and II (MATH 117, MATH 118).

2   *NIMS Credentials to satisfy the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming (MECH 114) requirements include:  Measurement, Materials and Safety (MMS), CNC Milling-Setup/Programming, and CNC Turning-Setup/Programming Level I credentials.

3   *NIMS Credentials to satisfy the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming I-Mill (MECH 120) requirements include:  MMS, CNC Milling-Setup/Programming Level I, and CNC Milling Level II credentials.

4   *NIMS Credentials to satisfy the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming II-Lathe (MECH 121) requirements include:  MMS, CNC turning-Setup/Programming Level I, and CNC Turning Level II credentials.                                  

5   Engineering Physics I (PHYS 221) may be substituted for Physics I (PHYS 101).

6   Program advisor must approve choice of electives from areas of computer programming, electronics, drafting, metrology, or mechanical technology.      

7   Physical Wellness is highly recommended.

* Butler County Community College does not offer coursework that leads to NIMS certifications.
