METR 217 - Electrical Metrology

5 Credits: (4 lecture, 3 lab)

Course Description
This course introduces the student to the analog semiconductor devices and circuits commonly used in electrical instrumentation. The course then brings together various digital and analog circuits as they are applied in electric meters. This leads into actual electrical calibration and calibration laboratory practices and procedures. Construction and troubleshooting of circuits, documentation and control procedures, instrument calibration, and measurement uncertainty will be emphasized. 

Note Fall semester only.

Prerequisite ELEC 110 and ELEC 225.

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Perform complete analysis of various amplifier circuits.

B. Demonstrate the use of discrete devices in popular circuit configurations.

C. Explain in writing the causes for most deviations in theory-to-actual results.

D. Calculate test uncertainty ratios and use them to determine calibration requirements for various electric meters and oscilloscopes.

E. Explain in writing the circuit theory of DC voltage, DC current, AC voltage, AC current, and resistance measurement devices.

F. Write calibration and documentation procedures.
