MUSC 101 - Introduction to Music 3 Credits: (3 lecture)
Course Description This course is a study of the elements of music; the history and development of music and musical instruments; the international character of music and the contributions of nations and ethnic groups to the literature of music; and selections from the vast literature of musical compositions for soloists, choruses, and small and large instrumental ensembles.

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Show knowledge of the basic elements of music.
B. Recognize musical styles and representative composers by historical periods.
C. Listen to music perceptively.
D. Show knowledge of the lives, culture, and contemporaries of the major composers.
Content A. Elements of music and music vocabulary.
B. Music of the major periods (before 1600, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, 20th Century).
C. Music of North America (folk, blues, jazz, gospel, popular).
D. Field trips to an Opera, Symphony Concert, and/or Recital.
Student Evaluation Class participation, student reports, and examinations (including the final examination) will be used to determine grades.
