NURS 142 - Pharmacology for Nurses II 1 Credits: (1 lecture)
Course Description This course emphasizes the nursing role in pharmacological treatment for maternal-child, pediatric, and common chronic disorders. It is designed to assist the student to apply critical thinking skills in the administration of medications for individuals in the clinical setting.
Prerequisite NURS 101, NURS 141, BIOL 131, PHED 125, and PSYC 201.Corequisite NURS 102, BIOL 132, PSYC 203.

Objectives The student will be able to
A. Apply basic concepts of human growth and development to pharmacology.
B. Explain the nursing implications of medication administration throughout the lifespan.
C. Calculate safe dosages for medication administration throughout the lifespan.
D. Discuss the safety measures in medication administration appropriate for individuals in various stages of the lifespan.
E. Compare and contrast different pharmacological approaches for individuals in chronic pain.
F. Identify the nursing role in the pharmacological management of individuals with chronic health problems.
G.Describe the nurse’s role in the pharmacological management of individuals with fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Content A. Pharmacotherapy during pregnancy and lactation
B. Pharmacotherapy during infancy
C. Pharmacotherapy during childhood
D. Pharmacotherapy and the aging adult
E. Pharmacotherapy for management of common chronic health problems
F. Pharmacotherapy for management of fluid and electrolyte imbalances
Student Evaluation Course evaluation will be based on examinations, quizzes, and case studies.
