NURS 135 - Role Transition to Nursing Process 3 Credits: (3 lecture)
Course Description This course will assist licensed practical nurses (LPN’s) and other advanced standing students with the transition into the nursing program at Butler County Community College. Fundamentals of safe, ethical, and legal nursing will be reviewed. Opportunities to review nursing skills and practice documentation of nursing care are provided using electronic resources.
Prerequisite Current, valid PA LPN licensure, or prior coursework equivalent to NURS 101.Corequisite BIOL 131, PSYC 201, PHED 125, and NURS 141.

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Discuss the principles that promote quality and safety when performing basic nursing skills according to current standards of practice.
B. Recognize nursing actions that demonstrate caring.
C. Describe essential aspects of therapeutic communication techniques needed in the RN role.
D. Employ the nursing process to develop individualized concept maps and care plans for patients presented in case studies.
E. Develop a clinical question using the PICO format as an appropriate tool for evidence-based practice.
F. Identify common health promotion needs of individuals in a variety of health care settings. G.Explain the principles of safe delegation and coordination of patient care.

Student Evaluation Course evaluation will be based on examinations and written/oral assignments. Students must pass a comprehensive final exam to enter NURS 102 in the spring semester.
