PHED 102 - Physical Fitness

1 Credits: (3 lab)

Course Description
Physical Fitness is a course designed to improve the overall physical well-being on an individual basis.  The course utilizes the Aerobic concepts and principles emphasizing running, cycling, and walking.  The objective is to stress the cardio-respiratory and pulmonary systems in particular and monitor that stress toward an improved level of fitness.

Note Students beyond the age of 35 may want to obtain a physical exam before enrolling in this class. These classes may be used as a partial fulfillment of the core requirement for Physical Education or may be used as electives.

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Identify the five major components of a physical fitness program.

B. Choose an exercise mode and individualize exercise prescription.

C. Train to meet pre-established performance standards based on his or her own individual exercise prescription.

D. Describe the training concepts and principles as prescribed by the Position Statement of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Content
A. Running, walking, stationary cycling

B. Warm up and cool down exercise routines

C. Muscular strength and endurance training protocols

D. Coronary risk factors and cardio-respiratory disease

E. Life style and physical wellness

Student Evaluation
A. Pre- and post-testing of the 5 major components

B. Adherence to an individualized daily exercise prescription

C. Perform exercises according to the student’s own pre-established standards

D. Final written exam
