PHED 105 - Outdoor Adventure

1 Credits: (3 lab)

Course Description
Outdoor Adventure is a course designed to provide the student with the introduction to a series of lifetime outdoor adventure activities. The student will experience such activities as canoeing, backpacking and orienteering. 

Note Additional class time required for field and overnight trips. Student must be a competent swimmer and in good physical condition. These classes may be used as a partial fulfillment of the core requirement for Physical Education or may be used as electives.

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Identify five river hazards.

B. Demonstrate the proper fitting of a personal flotation devise (PFD) and explain its importance in terms of personal safety.

C. Demonstrate self rescue techniques (HELP and HUDDLE) in a water environment.

D. Accurately throw a throw bag 50 feet at a target.

E. Develop a preplan for a float trip.

F. Develop basic canoeing skills on lakes and/or rivers.

G. Identify the dynamics of moving water.

H. Discuss and identify the proper clothing to wear when involved in outdoor activities such as backpacking or canoeing.

I. Identify the basic equipment needed for backpacking.

J. Develop a preplan for a backpacking trip.

K. Participate in an organized backpacking and canoe trip.

L. Develop a greater appreciation and respect for the outdoors.

M. Examine, through group activities, strengths and weaknesses of yourself and the group.

Student Evaluation
Assignments, attendance of field trips, examinations, and projects. Means of determining final grade will be reviewed with the student at the beginning of the semester. Overnight field trip required.
