PHED 129 - Introduction to Pilates 1 Credits: (3 lab)
Course Description This course is an introduction to Pilates exercises. Students will be introduced to the importance of maintaining an exercise program that limits stress on joints. The focus and development of this course is on the core center, correct breathing, as well as correct alignment of the body.

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Describe the Pilates philosophy of the relation between mind and body as it affects everyday life.
B. Write an abstract of his/her knowledge of Pilates and present the abstract to the class.
C. Create and self-monitor a complete Pilates program pertinent to his/her needs, and goals.
D. Practice Pilates exercises safely and cooperatively with partners and/or small groups.
E. Evaluate individual progress by recording weekly sessions in a personal journal.
F. Exhibit proper breathing and body alignment while completing the Pilates exercises.
Content A. Pilates exercises with different levels of difficulty
B. Lower and upper body exercises along with abdominal scooping
C. Pilates personal journal
D. Pilates Mat Exercise Program Abstract
E. Flexibility, proper body alignment and controlled breathing techniques
Student Evaluation Evaluation will be based on class participation and attendance, a personal journal, oral presentation(s), and demonstration of proper technique as determined by the instructor.
