PHED 130 - Canoeing and Water Safety 1 Credits: (3 lab)
Course Description This course develops river canoeing and water safety skills. The student will learn how to prepare for a canoeing trip, identify hazards and dangers associated with water, and develop water safety and paddling skills. Student must be a competent swimmer and in good physical condition.
Note Classroom and river trips are required and may last longer than the scheduled class. Students must be in good physical condition, able to swim, handle themselves underwater, and deal with a variety of environmental and weather conditions.
Text No textbook required.
Objectives The student will be able to
A. Demonstrate the proper fitting of a personal flotation device (PFD) and explain its importance in terms of personal safety.
B. Select personal protective equipment (PPE) based upon prevalent environmental and water conditions.
C. Read moving water features and hazards by scouting and select an appropriate route to run.
D. Demonstrate the following rescue skills: defensive and aggressive self rescue swimming, swimming a boat to shore, shore based rescue (throw bags), and boat-over-boat rescue.
E. Use proper body mechanics and demonstrate the following river maneuvers and techniques: ascend and descend river currents, eddy turns, peel outs, ferries, and S-turns.
F. Use hand, whistle, and paddle signals to communicate with other paddlers on the water.
G. Develop and demonstrate the following paddling strokes: forward, back, draws, pries, J-stroke, cross strokes, Duffek (on side and offside), and bracing techniques.

Student Evaluation Evaluation will be based upon examinations, assignments, and attendance. Means of determining final grade will be reviewed with students at the beginning of the semester.
