PHED 140 - River Kayaking 1 Credits: (.33 lecture, 1.33 laboratory hours)
Course Description This course develops river kayaking and safety skills utilizing whitewater kayaks. Course components include how to prepare for the paddling environment, identifying water features and hazards, paddling techniques, and water safety skills in Class I and II. Student must be a competent swimmer and in good physical condition.
Text No textbook required.
Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Select personal protective equipment (PPE) based upon prevalent environmental and water conditions.
B. Cite the priorities of rescue and identify the rescue sequence.
C. Read moving water features and hazards by scouting and select an appropriate route to run.
D. Use proper body mechanics to demonstrate the following river maneuvers and techniques: ascend and descend river currents, eddy turns, peel outs, ferries, and S-turns.
E. Demonstrate the following rescue skills: wet exit, defensive and aggressive self rescue swimming, swimming a boat to shore, shore based rescue (throw bags), and boat assisted rescue (T-rescue, bumping, towing, and tired swimmer).
F. Develop and demonstrate the following paddling strokes: forward, back, sweeps, draws (side and stern), Duffek, and bracing techniques.
