PHED 171 - Backpacking and Rock Climbing 1 Credits: (3 lab)
Course Description
Backpacking and Rock Climbing is a course designed to provide the student with an introduction to a series of lifetime outdoor adventure activities. The student will participate in such activities as backpacking, rock climbing, and rappelling. Additional class time will be required for field and overnight trips. Students must be in good physical condition.

Objectives
The student will be able to:
A. Identify and discuss the proper clothing to wear when involved in outdoor activities such as backpacking.
B. Identify the basic equipment needed for backpacking.
C. Participate in an organized backpacking trip.
D. Utilize fundamental rock climbing and rappelling techniques.
E. Identify basic equipment needed for rock climbing and rappelling.
F. Identify and discuss methods of anchoring rappelling systems.
G. Explain environmentally sound rock climbing and rappelling practices.
H. Identify and discuss the most important safety issues pertaining to backpacking and rock climbing.
