PHYS 101 - Physics I

4 Credits: (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Course Description
This course is designed as an introduction to Physics for students in technology and Liberal Arts programs. Topics include vectors, kinematics, dynamics (translational and rotational), energy and power, momentum properties of materials, and the gas laws and temperature. Microcomputer Based Laboratory (MBL) activities are exclusively utilized.  This course meets the General Education competency of Scientific Reasoning (SR).

 

Prerequisite MATH 117 and PHYS 100Corequisite OR Co-requisite: MATH 101

A. Recognize general physical principals.

B. Develop skills in problem solving.

C. Use measurements, and basic vector algebra to solve problems in mechanics.

D. Utilize Newton’s three laws to solve problems.

E. Apply the ideas of displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, energy, and momentum.

F. Use principles of rotational motion to solve physical problems.

G. Apply ideas of viscosity and fluids.

H. Apply concepts of temperature and the gas laws.

I. Apply the scientific method. (SR)

J. Utilize basic laboratory equipment appropriate to the discipline. (SR)
