PHED 201 - Introduction to Adapted Physical Activity 3 Credits: (3 contact hours)
Course Description This course will examine human movement principles related to individuals with disabilities. Students will learn observational methods that can be applied in community and educational settings to assess unique physical needs. The application of evidence based practices that meet the unique needs of each individual will be introduced.

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Identify important advocacy events in the history of education, physical fitness, and community-based leisure, sport, and recreational activities for individuals with disabilities.
B. Define specific behavioral and motor characteristics of individuals with cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments that have implications for learning.
C. Evaluate the health risks for individuals with special physical conditions, injuries, longer-term disabilities, and chronic diseases.
D. Delineate methods of observation used in community-based and educational settings to assess individuals with unique needs.
E. Design a physical activity program based on an individual’s unique needs.
