BIOL 131 - Human Anatomy and Physiology I

4 Credits: (3 lecture, 3 lab)

Course Description
This is the first course in a two-course sequence that investigates cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body. The focus of this course is on the organization of the body and the integumentary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and reproductive systems. Metabolism and acid-base balance are also discussed.  Dissection is required.  This course meets the General Education competency of Scientific Reasoning (SR).

Prerequisite Eligibility for enrollment in ENGL 101 based on placement test scores; or Cs or better in ENGL 029 or ENGL 030 and/or ENGL 034 or ENGL 035, as required; or transfer credits meeting or surpassing ENGL 101 prerequisites.

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Describe the concepts that unify the study of anatomy and physiology, including homeostasis, hierarchy of structure, structure/function relationships, and principles of chemistry and cell biology.

B. Describe the structure and function of the skin and associated tissues.

C. Identify the bones of the human body, including their major processes and depressions.

D. Predict relative stability and range of motion of joints, based upon their structure.

E. Identify major skeletal muscles, as well as their origins, insertions, and actions.

F. Describe the cellular and molecular events related to skeletal muscle physiology, including nerve signaling, contraction, and metabolism.

G. Describe major cellular metabolic reactions involving carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

H. Predict how the body maintains acid-base balance, given specific changes in pH.

I. Describe the major endocrine organs, their secretions, and actions on target tissues.

J. Describe the anatomy of the male and female reproductive systems and hormonal regulation of sex cell production.

K. Apply the scientific method. (SR)

L. Utilize the basic laboratory equipment appropriate to the discipline. (SR)
