BIOL 219 - Current Topics in Biology

Course Description
Intended for biology majors, but also open to non-majors who meet the prerequisites, this course provides students with opportunities to investigate three or four of the most active research areas in biology through journal readings and guest presentations. Fields from which topics are drawn could include (but are not limited to) nanotechnology, biotechnology, epidemiology, ethnobotany, immunology, evolution, and behavioral genetics. 

Note Spring semester only.

Prerequisite BIOL 120 or BIOL 101 or permission of instructor.

A. Describe the basic biological concepts and laboratory techniques of each area of research studied.

B. Predict potential societal applications and ethical considerations of each area of research studied.

C. Describe career opportunities related to each area of research studied.

D. Use electronic databases of academic journals to research a topic in the biological sciences.

E. Analyze data from scientific journal articles.

F. Summarize, present, analyze and critique the protocols and findings of a scientific journal article.

Student Evaluation
