CHEM 104 - Introduction to Nanotechnology 4 Credits: (3 lecture, 2 lab)
Course Description As a fast growing technology, nanotechnology has transformed manufacturing, energy, health care, electronics, cosmetics, clothing, and nearly every area of modern life. Here is a course designed to introduce students to the fascinating details beyond the traditional microscopic realm. Topics include the basic concepts, techniques, and applications of nanotechnology. This course is for both science and non-science majors. This course meets the General Education competency of Scientific Reasoning (SR).

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Explain the concept and context of nanotechnology
B. Describe basic nanoscale characterization techniques
C. Describe top-down and bottom-up processing techniques
D. Apply nanotechnology concepts to products or processes in the world we live
E. Apply the scientific method (SR)
F. Utilize basic laboratory equipment appropriate to the discipline (SR)
Content A. Introduction to nanotechnology
B. Nanoscale properties
C. Nanoscale characterization tools
D. Top-down nanofabrication: lithography, deposition, and etching techniques
E. Bottom-up nanofabrication: self assembly
F. Nanomaterials: nanoparticles, carbon based nanomaterials, and nanowires
G. Applications of nanotechnology in energy, electronics, and health
Student Evaluation Objectives A, B, C, D, E and F will be evaluated via a combination of examinations, lab activities, assignments, and a departmental final exam.
