CHEM 100 - Descriptive Chemistry

4 Credits: (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts, procedures, and applications of chemistry to the world in which they live.  This course is for non-science majors, pre-nursing students, and those preparing for the sciences.  This course meets the General Education competency of Scientific Reasoning (SR).

 

Prerequisite MATH091 or concurrent registration. Students must be eligible for enrollment in ENGL101 based on plcmt. test scores; or Cs or better in ENGL029 or ENGL030 and/or ENGL034 or ENGL035, as required; or transfer credits meeting or surpassing ENGL101 prereqs.

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Perform chemical calculations.

B. Convert chemical units from one system to another using measurement and dimensional analysis.

C. Describe the atomic models and modular structure using current theories.

D. Identify chemical periodicity of the elements.

E. Describe acid/base, organic, and gaseous systems.

F. Compute stoichiometric problems using the mole concept.

G. Demonstrate safe chemical handling.

H. Apply the scientific method. (SR)

I. Utilize basic laboratory equipment appropriate to the discipline. (SR)

A. Mathematical principles and calculator usage.

B. Measurements and dimensional analysis.

C. The structure of matter.

D. Periodic relationships of the elements and nomenclature.

E. Mole concepts and stoichiometry.

F. Solutions and solubilities.

G. Acids, bases, and pH.

H. Behavior of gases.

I. Introduction to organic chemistry.

Student Evaluation
The objectives will be evaluated as follows: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and I will be evaluated via a combination of examinations, quizzes, lab activities, assignments, a departmental midterm examination, and a departmental final examination.
