ENGL 035 - Preparatory English

3 Credits: (3 lecture)

Course Description
The course is designed for students requiring skill review in preparation for English I. Emphasis is placed upon the overall writing process: pre-writing, writing, rewriting. The student will study grammar, sentence construction, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary within the context of individual writing.

Prerequisite A grade of C or better of all students enrolled in ENGL 035 is a prerequisite for ENGL 101.

Objectives
The student will be able to: 

A. Explain the steps of the writing process. 

B. Execute the steps of the writing process. 

C. Use standard invention techniques. 

D. Write a paragraph with a clear topic sentence and supporting details. 

E. Write an essay with an introduction, a clear thesis statement, supporting details, and a conclusion. 

F. Choose the vocabulary and syntax of standard American English for their writing. 

G. Write essays in a variety of rhetorical modes. 

H. Use the conventions of standard American English as presented in the current handbook to eliminate errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
