PKMT 101 - Forestry

4 Credits: (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Course Description
This course provides the student with a general understanding of forestry and forest management. Emphasis is on tree identification, basic forest management, silvicultural techniques, forest measurements, map and compass, and global positioning systems. PA 130 - Basic Wildland Firefighter and Project Learning Tree training are components of the course.

Objectives
The student will be able to
A. Identifyhistoric events and legislation impacting forestryin the United States.
B. Identify common tree species of Pennsylvania.
C. Participate in the Firefighter Training(S-130).
D. Identify basic silvicultural and forest management practices.
E. Measure a stand of trees anddetermine the board feet of lumber.
F. Read a topographic map and calculate distance and direction using a compass frommap points.
G. Use a GPS (Global Positioning System) to find a landmark.

Student Evaluation
Evaluation will be based upon examinations, assignments, attendance of field trips, and presentations. Means of determining final grade will be reviewed with students at the beginning of the semester.Bibliography
