PTAP 124 - Procedures IV

5 Credits: (3 lecture, 4 lab) First 7 weeks

Course Description
This course is the fourth of four sequential courses. Topics will include wound care, orthoses, cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy, pediatrics, geriatrics, and women’s health topics.  Also included will be a continuation of evidence-based practice.

Prerequisite PTAP 123 and PTAP 230. Corequisite PTAP 105.

Objectives
The student will be able to

A. Describe appropriate skin and wound assessment techniques.

B. Perform common prevention and treatment interventions for the various types of wounds.

C. Perform common assessment and treatment strategies for patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction.

D. Describe the components of normal pediatric development.

E. Identify normal and abnormal developmental and functional movement patterns.

F. Explain the principles, mechanics, and various types and components for orthotic interventions.

G. Demonstrate the appropriate usage of various orthoses.

H. Describe the characteristics of physical and physiologic changes that occur in the pediatric and geriatric populations.

I. Implement age-appropriate treatment interventions for the geriatric patient population.

J. Explain Physical Therapy interventions for various women’s health topics.

K. Demonstrate appropriate communications skills with mock patients and caregivers

L. Document appropriate aspects of patient interactions.

M. Apply the fundamentals of evidence-based practice.

C. Cardiovascular and pulmonary assessment activities

D. Cardiovascular and pulmonary treatment interventions.

E. Orthotic principles, types, and assessment and treatment interventions

F. Pediatric neurodevelopment (motor milestones, gross and fine motor control, developmental reflexes)

G. Physiologic aging and treatment strategies for geriatric patients

H. Introduction to women’s health topics: obstetric Physical Therapy, lymphedema management, incontinence management

J. Evidence-based practice

Student Evaluation
