ENGL 104 - Research Writing with Literature

3 Credits: (3 lecture)

Course Description
The emphasis of this course is upon literary analysis, focused on the standard literary genres and on the process of writing a research paper on a literary topic. Students will continue the study of writing thoughtful and organized expositions as well as careful editing of grammar and sentences. Completion of both ENGL 101 and 104 with a grade of B or higher in each satisfies the Pennsylvania Department of Education Basic Skills test requirements for Reading and Writing for pre-service teaching candidates. This course meets the General Education competencies of Critical Thinking (CT) and Technological Competence (TC).

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Evaluate a diverse collection of evidence related to the specific literary question/thesis. (CT)

B. Synthesize the evidence and draw conclusions regarding a specific literary genre. (CT)

C. Compile a written, verbal, or visual response to the literary evidence that acknowledges alternative explanations or views within Literature. (CT)

D. Prepare and apply basic software in the discipline through essays on each of the literary genres covered in class. (TC)

E. Use MLA (required for English majors) or APA guidelines to format and document source material for papers.

F. Utilize electronic communication via job application project materials. (TC)

G. Use available research facilities to support their writings.

A. Essays of fiction, poetry, and drama.

B. Essay on one other genre.

C. Literary Research Paper.

D. Use of analytical, persuasive, and/or literary evaluation in the literary research paper.
