BIOL 116 - Human Biology

4 Credits: (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Course Description

Human Biology establishes a foundation of knowledge in biology, anatomy and physiology through the lens of the human body.  This course investigates the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs and organ systems and is intended for the medical assistant, medical secretary, therapeutic recreation, or other allied health student.  This course meets the General Education competency of Scientific Reasoning (SR).

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Describe the concepts that unify the study of human biology, including characteristics common to all living organisms such as homeostasis, hierarchy of structure, structure and function relationships, and principles of chemistry and cell biology.

B. Describe the structure and function of the major components of the integumentary, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, digestive, respiratory, urinary, skeletal, muscular nervous, sensory, endocrine, and reproductive systems.

C. Identify the major components of the integumentary, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, digestive, respiratory, urinary, skeletal, muscular nervous, sensory, endocrine, and reproductive systems.

D. Apply the scientific method. (SR)

E. Utilize basic laboratory equipment appropriate to the discipline. (SR)

Student Evaluation
The objectives will be evaluated as follows: A and B will be evaluated using unit examinations. C, D, and E will be evaluated via laboratory quizzes and/or assignments and a comprehensive laboratory practical.
