Course Description

This course emphasizes the nursing role in pharmacological treatment for maternal-child, pediatric, and mental health disorders. It is designed to assist the student to apply critical thinking skills in the administration of medications for individuals in the clinical setting. 2:0:0

Objectives
The student will be able to: 

A. Apply the standards of practice for practical nursing to medication administration for clients in various stages along the human growth and development continuum.   

B. Explain the safety implications of medication administration as they apply for clients in various stages throughout the lifespan. 

C. Calculate safe dosages for medication administration throughout the lifespan. 

D. Describe the nursing process as it relates to the pharmacological management for maternal/newborn, pediatric, and mental health client. 

E. apply concepts of pharmacology relative to the maternal/newborn, pediatric, and mental health disorders client. 

Content
1. Standards of practice for medication administration across the lifespan. 

2. Safety implications of medication administration throughout the lifespan 

3. Calculating safe dose medications with specific attention to weight-based dosing for newborns/pediatrics, drug toxicity, and safe dose ranges pediatrics and adults.   

4. Nursing process and medication administration across the lifespan. 

5. Pharmacological management in maternal/newborn, pediatric, and older adult patients with mental health disorders.
