Course Description This course emphasizes the nursing role in the pharmacological treatment of medical-surgical disorders in the various health settings while caring for the aging adult. Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Apply the standards of practice in medication administration for the aging adult in transitional and long-term care settings.
B. Perform the safety measures of medication administration in both inpatient and outpatient care facilities.
C. Calculate safe dosages of medication for individuals with medical-surgical health alterations.
D. Describe the nursing process as it relates to the pharmacological management in aging adult with medical-surgical health alterations.
E. Apply concepts of pharmacology in the management of aging clients with medical-surgical health alterations.
Content 1. Standards of practice relative to medication administration in long-term, and community healthcare settings.
2. Client rights of medication administration relative to medical/surgical disease alterations and associated effects of the aging process.
3. Dosage calculation in the aging adult
4. Nursing process and medication administration in aging adults with medical-surgical health alterations.
5. Pharmacological practical nursing management in various healthcare settings.
