PNUR 110 - Practical Nursing I

Course Description

This course introduces students to principles of nursing practice as well as medical/surgical disease pathophysiology. The focus is on providing basic nursing care to individuals in a variety of health care settings within the role of practical nursing. The student learns basic skills and builds confidence to practice nursing in a safe manner. Clinical experiences are obtained in a variety of health care settings. 6:16:5

Prerequisite Admission to the Nursing Program Corequisite PN Pharm I, BIOL 131, and PSYC 201

Objectives
The student will be able to: 

A. Demonstrate basic nursing skills according to standards of practical nursing practice. 

B. Describe cultural and spiritual/religious nursing interventions in a holistic manner to individuals across the lifespan. 

C. Choose appropriate communication techniques when interacting with individuals, families, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. 

D. Identify critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice to determine alterations in clients’ individual focused health assessments as seen in the medical/surgical           pathophysiology disease processes.  

E. Identify common health promotion needs of clients as it relates to their physical assessment and safety needs in a variety of health care settings. 

F. Describe the role of the practical nurse in coordinating client goals according to the client’s individualized plan of care. 

G. Locate data related to clients’ care using evidence-based nursing care using appropriate resources. 

H. Explain the importance of respectful behavior in the role of the practical nurse. 

 

Content
1. Professional scope of practice for the practical nurse, practicing nursing skills for safety and quality.   

2. Culture, spiritual, sexual orientation client needs in relation to client care. 

3. Communication techniques with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. 

4. Introduction to critical thinking/evidence-based practice in nursing care, fundamental clinical nursing skills, clinical focused health assessment. 

5. Holistic health and wellness promotion in practice for the acute and community healthcare settings.  

6. Introduction to the nursing process and individualized client care planning.   

7. Electronic and written documentation techniques at various healthcare settings and in simulation.   

8. Introduction to respectful behaviors expected in the role of a practical nurse. 

 

Student Evaluation
1. Evaluation for objectives A-H will be based on examinations, written assignments, customized HESI exam, comprehensive final examination, return skills demonstration      in lab, and clinical evaluation.Bibliography
