PNUR 111 - Practical Nursing II 9 Credits:
Course Description This course prepares the student to apply the nursing process to adults and children with alterations in physical, emotional and mental health needs. Maternal, newborn, and childcare are included with an emphasis on family centered care. Students will use evidence-based practice in providing and managing safe nursing care for: maternity patients and their newborns, pediatric patients, and adult patients with mental health disorders. 7:16:5

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Demonstrate accountability in nursing practice according to scope of practice for practical nurses when caring for clients throughout the lifespan.
B. Recognize cultural, spiritual and sexual preferences when providing nursing care according to individual clients’ developmental needs and mental health beliefs throughout the lifespan.
C. Select appropriate communication techniques when providing care for individuals across the lifespan and developmental age.
D. Implement critical thinking strategies used in the nursing care of individuals throughout the lifespan, developmental age and mental health abilities.
E. Employ appropriate health promotion activities for individuals and their families in the various community settings.
F. Illustrate a plan of care for patients across the lifespan and within various clinical settings.
G.Utilize health-care information technology to communicate client data and plan of care completion for individuals across the lifespan.
H. Demonstrates respectful behavior in the care of clients in various developmental stages across the lifespan.
Content 1. Professional scope of practice for the practical nurse with maternity/newborn, pediatric and older adult clients in acute and community settings.
2. Cultural, spiritual and sexual preferences for the maternity, pediatric and older adult clients.
3. Communication techniques with pediatric and adult population clients and the variations across the lifespan.
4. Utilize the nursing process to address client conditions for the maternity, pediatric and older adult populations that are specific to each stage in the lifespan continuum.
5. Application of patient safety and health promotion activities for maternity/newborn, pediatric and older adult populations.
6. Generalized/individualized plans of care for maternity/newborn, pediatric and older adult populations in acute and community settings.
7. Various charting/documentation methods for maternity/newborn, pediatric and older adult patients as they relate to their developmental/age-specific client needs.
8. Practice professional interactions and care with clients in the various lifespan stages and developmental needs while providing patient/family centered care.
Student Evaluation Evaluation for objectives A-H will be based on examinations, written assignments, customized HESI exam, comprehensive final examination, return skills demonstration in lab, and clinical evaluation.
