PNUR 113 - Practical Nursing IV 1 Credits:
Course Description This practical nursing course assists the student with the transition from the role of student nurse to the role of graduate practical nurse. The student has the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and standards of practical nursing practice necessary to fulfill the practical nurse role. 2:0:0

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Demonstrate accountability for actions related to standards of practice and legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines
B. Provide nursing interventions in a culturally sensitive and holistic manner to individuals across the lifespan.
C. Employ the framework of therapeutic communication when interacting with clients across the life span.
D. Demonstrate critical thinking through the use of clinical problem-solving process and evidence-based research to deliver safe nursing care across the lifespan
E. Provide holistic health promotion strategies in partnership with the individual and community.
F. Demonstrate clinical competence to meet a client’s individualized plan of care
G. Utilize information and technology to prevent errors and communicate data as part of nursing practice.
H. Understand the role of the practical nurse’s knowledge, preparation, experience, and competency to perform in practice.
Content 1. Guidelines for the practical nurse scope of practice: accountability, and patient safety
2. Culture, spiritual and sexual orientation as it relates to providing patient and family centered care
3. Effective communication skills including responsibility to report to appropriate healthcare personnel
4. Clinical decision concept mapping of various healthcare issues using evidence-based practice modalities
5. Health promotion strategies in various community and long-term health care settings
6. Implementing nursing care activities based upon a patient’s individualized plan of care in various health care settings
7. Utilizing informatic systems to document and relay patient information to appropriate healthcare personnel.
8. Professional issues in nursing practice in relation to roles, legal and ethical issues within the healthcare delivery system
