Course Description
Diagnosis coding is the language of reporting why a service was medically necessary for patient care. This course is designed to provide the student with the fundamental knowledge of basic coding systems and their diverse applications in the healthcare environment.

Prerequisite AHEA 280 and AHEA 125 Corequisite AHEA 280 and AHEA 125

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A. Identify various medical coding applications in the health care industry.

B. Explain the importance of medical documentation in the coding process.

C. Differentiate among the following coding systems: International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision (ICD-9-CM), International Classification of Diseases 10th       Revision (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).

D. Demonstrate accurate diagnostic coding skills, including classification and sequences.

E. Explain the relationship between procedure and diagnostic codes.

F. Summarize patient privacy issues.

G. Investigate the association between accurate coding and the collection of health statistics.
