COMM 110 - Digital Art and Design I

3 Credits: (3 lecture)

Course Description
This course introduces industry-standard software for creating vector-based graphics used in branding, illustration, and digital design. Students learn essential tools, typography, color, and layout techniques while building professional-quality artwork. Emphasis is placed on developing technical proficiency, design thinking, and file preparation standards for both print and digital production workflows.

Note This course meets the General Education competency of Technological Competence (TC).

Spring semester only.

 

Prerequisite COMM 102 with a “C” grade or higher.


Objectives
The student will be able to

A. Competently use the software workspace, tools, and panels for an efficient workflow.

B. Demonstrate the application of basic software in the discipline. (TC)

C. Employ the various procedures necessary to complete a piece of computer art.(TC)

D. Create a logo for a fictitious client through research and development. (TC)

E. Determine the best tools to use for advanced rendering situations.

F. Apply advanced techniques to achieve high-end illustrations. (TC)

G. Demonstrate use of electronic communication. (TC)

H.  Understand the fundamental differences and appropriate uses of vector vs. raster graphics.

I.   Utilize layers to organize and manage complex illustrations effectively.

J.   Apply color theory principles using the various color tools, swatches, and gradients.

K.  Bring initial design concepts from thumbnail sketches into fully realized vector-based compositions.
