COMM 112 - Graphic Design I

3 Credits: (3 lecture)

Course Description
This course builds proficiency using professional layout software to produce eye-catching print and digital designs. Students apply design principles-typography, hierarchy, and color theory-while also learning proper image importing, file preparation, and workflow techniques. Emphasis is on creative problem-solving, effective composition, and preparing files for production. 

Note Spring semester only. 

Prerequisite COMM 102  and COMM 107 with a “C” grade or better or permission of instructor.

Objectives
The student will be able to

A. Demonstrate knowledge of a professional layout program’s tools, panels, and workspace.

B. Apply design principles to create visually engaging layouts.

C. Apply hierarchical principles to visual communication projects.

D. Import graphics to professional standards.

E. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate file formats.

F. Apply basic grid systems to organize text and imagery effectively.

G. Participate in peer review, providing feedback to classmates.

H. Develop layouts that reflect industry standards. 

Content
A. Software tools, panels, and workspace

B. Expressive typography:  hierarchy, experimenting with contrast, exploring various type treatments

C. Best practices for importing and effectively incorporating graphics and images with text

D. Selecting and managing various image file formats for best results

E. Design of various print and digital projects

F. The peer review process

G. File naming and organization for professional practices

Student Evaluation
Evaluation will be based upon tests, reading assignments, student presentations, and creative projects.
