PKMT 104 - Foundations of Parks, Recreation & Outdoor Resources3 Credits: (3 lecture)
Course Description This course introduces the foundations of parks, recreation, and outdoor resources through the historical development of the profession, key events, and influential leaders. Students examine agency roles, career pathways, and current trends while beginning professional preparation through job exploration, goal setting, and foundational resume and cover letter development.

Objectives The student will be able to:
A. Analyze the historical development, philosophy, and societal value of parks, recreation, and leisure.
B. Examine key leaders, movements, and legislation that shaped the parks and recreation profession.
C. Differentiate between public, nonprofit, private, and commercial agencies providing recreation services.
D. Analyze current trends and issues influencing parks, recreation, and outdoor resource management.
E. Inspect career pathways, employment settings, and foundational skills required in the profession.
F. Create initial professional materials, including a resume, cover letter, and personal career goals.

Student Evaluation The objectives will be evaluated as follows: A, B, C, D tests - E, F assignments. Specific evaluation methods and grading criteria will be outlined at the beginning of the semester.
