ENGL 036 - Foundations of College Reading and Writing

4 Credits: (4 lecture)

Course Description
This course is designed for the student requiring in-depth reading and writing skill development to succeed in the college environment. In preparation for ENGL 101 College Writing, the course focuses on essential reading comprehension and retention skills.

Note Note: A grade of “C” or better is required to enroll in ENGL 101.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (2018) or a memoir or novel at the 850-1200 Lexile level selected by the instructor

Objectives
The student will be able to:

A.  Apply reading comprehension strategies to a variety of readings.

B.  Execute the steps of the writing process.

C. Write a first-person narrative essay with an introduction, a clear thesis statement, supporting details, and a conclusion.

D. Analyze a novel or memoir in a third-person essay that includes in-text citations with direct quotations and a Works Cited page following MLA formatting.

E. Use the conventions of Standard American English as presented in the current handbook to eliminate errors.
