Course Description This course explores the development of graphic design from the Industrial Revolution to contemporary digital and print media. Students study major movements, technologies, influential designers, political contexts, and cultural shifts shaping visual communication. Students will learn to evaluate design history, recognize stylistic evolution, and connect historical context to professional practice.
Objectives The student will be able to
A. Identify major historical periods, designers, and innovations in graphic design from the 19th century onward.
B. Analyze how cultural, economic, political, and technological changes have influenced design styles and communication.
C. Use appropriate terminology to discuss historical and contemporary works.
D. Analyze design works through historical, aesthetic, and cultural lenses.
E. Apply historical design principles and concepts to contemporary design projects.
F. Apply historical references to their own design work.

Student Evaluation Evaluation will be based upon assigned creative projects, classroom participation, reading assignments, and tests.
