Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program builds upon the skills acquired through the completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assistant. The student will complete additional courses related to administrative and clinical procedures, as well as institutional degree requirements to obtain his/her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Medical Assistant. This program prepares graduates as multi-skilled practitioners who are qualified to perform both administrative and clinical skills in the ambulatory healthcare setting.  A graduate of this program may seek employment as a Medical Assistant, medical office manager or medical records or coding clerk, medical laboratory technician, or other related occupations in the ambulatory healthcare setting.

Applicants must have a 2.50 GPA minimum from high school or college of most recent attendance (if 12+ college-level credits have been completed there) and submit an application packet available in January for the fall semester start of the following year available online and in the Admissions Office.  Students must earn a “C” or better in all courses in the curriculum for acceptance and continuation in this selective program. The Medical Assistant Program at Butler County Community College had a 100% program retention rate for the 2016-2017 cohort.

Program Competencies 

The student/graduate will be able to:

  • Incorporate cognitive knowledge in the performance of affective learning domains when providing patient care.
  • Implement therapeutic communications when interacting with patients.
  • Identify community resources that could assist in patient support, education, and well-being.
  • Demonstrate psychomotor skills and affective actions as satisfactory for an entry-level medical assistant.
  • Successfully pass the National Medical Assistant Certification Examination.
