Certificate of Achievement

This program allows students to obtain basic college level technical and communication skills. It is designed for students who have or are in the process of obtaining nationally recognized certifications in one of the following areas of employment: machining, HVAC, welding, building trades, or automobile and truck repair. Students with current certification(s) should see Note 1 below for certification credit details.

1  External Certification Credits:

NOCTI Qualifications: 6 credits awarded for NOCTI level Competent.  9 credits awarded for NOCTI level Advanced.


Machining: 9 credits will be awarded for NIMS Level I Certification, 6 credits will be awarded for NIMS Level II Certification.
     NIMS Machining Level I Certification can be used to satisfy 9 credits pertaining to the courses:
          *Lathe I (MACH 111), *Mill I (MACH 131), and *Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming (MECH 114). 
          *In order to receive course credits, specific certification skills must be obtained for each course–see course descriptions for details.
     NIMS Machining Level II Certification can be used to satisfy 6 credits pertaining to the courses: Lathe II (MACH 112) and Mill II (MACH 132).

      Butler County Community College does not offer coursework that leads to NIMS certifications.

HVAC: 9 credits will be awarded for NOCTI, ICE, or HVAC Excellence Certification.  3 credits will be awarded for EPA Certification.


Welding: 3 credits will be awarded for AWS Level I Certification.  6 credits will be awarded for AWS Level II Certification.


Automobile and Truck Repair: 15 credits will be awarded if a student successfully completes all of the following ASE assessments:  G1, A1, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8.


MSSC Certified Production Technician will receive credit for MECH 103 (technical elective).

NOTE:  A maximum of 15 certification credits will be awarded for any of the above combinations.

2  Technical Electives related to major are: CNC Programming (MECH 114), CNC Programming I-Mill (MECH 120), CNC Programming II-Lathe (MECH 121), Descriptive Chemistry (CHEM 112), Dimensional Metrology (METR 110), Environmental Science (PHSC 110), Applied Fluid Mechanics (MECH 210), GD & T (DRFT 112), HVAC System Design (TECH 220), Industrial Mechanics (PENG 102), Intro to Process Control and Programmable Logic Controllers (PENG 103),  Load Calculations (TECH 120), Manufacturing Processes and Materials (MECH 103), Microcomputing Applications (COMP 242), Physics I (PHYS 101), Process Control Instrumentation (INST 101), and 3-D Geometric Modeling/SOLIDWORKS® (DRFT 108).  Electrical Fundamentals (ELEC 110) can also be taken and would satisfy two technical electives (7 credits).  If Blueprint Reading (DRFT 114) was taken in the first semester, Technical Graphics w/AutoCad (DRFT-120) will be an acceptable Technical Elective.

3  College Algebra (MATH 101) or Trigonometry & Functions (MATH 102) or Calculus I (MATH 221) may be substituted for Technical Mathematics I (MATH 117).

4  Speech (COMM 201) may be substituted for Technical Writing I (ENGL 110) or College Writing (ENGL 101).

5  Mathematics Elective II options include Elementary Statistics (MATH 107), Technical Mathematics II (MATH 118), Trigonometry & Functions (MATH 102), Statistics and SPC (MATH 110), Calculus I (MATH 221), or Calculus II (MATH 222). If Intermediate Algebra (MATH 100) was taken in the first semester, College Algebra (MATH 101) will be an acceptable Mathematics Elective II option. If Intermediate Algebra (MATH 100) was taken in the first semester, College Algebra (MATH 101) or Technical Mathematics I (MATH 117) will be an acceptable Mathematics Elective II option.
