Park and Recreation Management - General Option (307A)

Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program prepares students for careers in parks, outdoor recreation, and natural resource management. The curriculum focuses on outdoor pursuits, recreation, leadership, interpretation, visitor safety, resource stewardship, and park operations, and is reinforced through hands-on learning experiences. Students earn industry-recognized certifications and select from flexible general-option courses to tailor their studies toward outdoor skills, park administration and operations, environmental education, law enforcement preparation, or transfer to a four-year institution. Graduates are prepared for employment in federal, state, local park systems, camps, nature centers, and community recreation agencies.

  1. The program provides structured general elective pathways that allow students to align their studies with specific career goals. Emphasis areas include Business, Park Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, and related social sciences. Approved academic coursework and qualifying professional certifications may be applied toward general elective credit in accordance with institutional policy.

  1. Certain program courses include field-based instruction and outdoor training. Students must be able to safely perform the essential functions of these courses, complete all required risk management documentation, and obtain designated certifications and associated fees. Participation is contingent upon meeting established safety standards; reasonable accommodations will be considered in accordance with institutional ADA policies where they do not compromise essential course requirements or safety.

  1. Students are required to complete a first aid training course.  A minimum level of Heartsaver First Aid Training or higher level is required.

  2. Environmental Biology, Biology I, or Environmental Science are highly recommended.

  3. Minimum mathematics: Intermediate Algebra or Business Mathematics.

  4. Critical Thinking Elective: Research Writing, Technical Writing II, Recent United States History, or General Psychology are recommended.
