This program prepares students for careers in the metal working trades. Courses are offered on main campus and at industry sites. Upon completion, students are prepared for the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level I tests in all seven skill areas and Level II tests in the Lathe and Mill.
NOTE: Courses listed in the first/third semester will be scheduled in the fall; second/forth semester courses will be scheduled in the spring. The student is encouraged to use the curriculum planner to keep track of courses taken and those still needed. In some cases, one or more courses may be taken in a different order than indicated on the planner. However, individual course prerequisites must be observed.

The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS)
NIMS is a nonprofit national educational foundation that fosters partnerships between businesses and schools to develop a skilled workforce for the metalworking industry. It serves the needs of the metalworking industry by assisting in the development of skill standards for educational and company training programs. Individual assessments can certify skill competencies that are nationally recognized. NIMS requirements focus on accuracy, consistency, safety, problem solving, teamwork and demonstrated performance. The machine Tool Technology certificate at Butler County Community College is directly aligned with the NIMS standards. NIMS credentials will be earned through performance exams given at the college.
NIMS Level I credentials can be earned in the following skill areas:
Measurement, Materials and Safety, Job Planning, Benchwork and Layout, Milling, Drill Press, Grinding, Turning-Chucking, Turning Between Centers.
NIMS Level II credentials can be earned in the following skill areas:
