Online Learning: Online & Hybrid Courses

Online courses are fully-accredited, transferable and may qualify for financial aid. Your transcript will not differentiate an online course from a traditional one. For general information regarding online learning at BC3, call the toll-free number at 1-888-826-2829, ext. 8523.

Online Courses - An online course primarily uses the Internet, the College’s Learning Management System (Blackboard), and other web-based applications for all instructions, activities, assessments, and class interaction. Online courses follow the same start date, end date, midterm and final exam schedule as all other BC3 credit courses (unless otherwise noted) and have set deadlines for assignments and testing.

Hybrid Courses - A hybrid course is essentially an online class, but also requires four or more on-campus meetings. These on-campus meetings may be used for any combination of lectures, discussions, presentations, labs, examinations, etc. Required on-campus meeting dates are listed on the credit course schedule.

Not all BC3 credit courses are offered in the online or hybrid format. See the Complete Online Course Listing for availability.

Admissions

Students must apply to the College if planning to take credit courses or programs at BC3, including those offered online, even if they are not planning to earn a degree or certificate. Students can apply online at http://www.bc3.edu/admissions. It is recommended that new students contact the Office of Admissions by calling the toll-free number at 1-888-826-2829, ext. 8346 to speak with a counselor before registering for classes.

Registration, Tuition & Fees

Students may register for online courses just like traditional classes. For information regarding registration, contact the Office of Records and Registration at 724-287-8711, ext. 8253.

Students pay the regular tuition and fees plus an additional $25 per credit hour for all online and hybrid courses.

Orientation

Completion of GENL 001B60 - ET Orientation is REQUIRED for all students taking their first online or hybrid course at BC3 or students who have not completed the ET Orientation within the past 2 years. This is a self-paced, online course that must be completed prior to the first day of class.

Skills & Abilities

Students enrolled in an online or hybrid course are expected to have basic computing, word-processing, reading and comprehension skills and prior experience using the Internet and email.

Computer Access

Students enrolled in an online or hybrid course are expected to have regular and unrestricted access to an up-to-date computer system (Windows or Macintosh) and a reliable broadband Internet connection (cable, DSL, T1/LAN). A dial-up connection is not recommended. Tablet computers, smart phones and some Internet browsers may not be compatible.

A student email account will be provided to all BC3 credit students within 24 hours of admission to the college.

A webcam, microphone and/or additional software may be required.

Testing & Identity Verification

In compliance with Federal regulations (34 CFR 602.17(g), online instructors  may require students to take proctored exams and/or participate in other methods of identity verification to ensure the student registered for the course is the same student who is participating in and completes the course for credit. Access to a webcam and microphone may be required, and students may be video recorded (with permission) for visual identification and to ensure academic integrity. Additional fees for proctoring services may apply.

Additional Course Materials

Additional items such as a webcam, microphone, class specific software, online access codes, and at-home lab kits may be required.  Additional fees may apply.
