Certificate of Achievement

This program prepares students for careers in the metalworking trades. Selected courses may be offered at off campus sites. Upon completion, students are prepared for the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Level I skill areas and Level II tests in the Lathe and Mill.

NOTE: Courses are listed in the first semester will be scheduled for the fall; second semester courses will be scheduled for the spring. (This may vary due to industrial training needs.)

The student is encouraged to use the curriculum planner to keep track of courses taken and those still needed. In some cases, one or more courses may be taken in a different order than indicated on the planner. However, individual course prerequisites must be observed. (Course times may vary, due to the needs of local company apprenticeship programs.)

DRFT 114 - Blueprint Reading (Machine) 3 credits ¹

Second Semester (15)

ENGL 110 - Workplace Communications 3 credits
or ENGL 101 - English I 3 credits ³
MECH 103 - Manufacturing Processes and Materials 3 credits
MACH 132 - Mill II 3 credits
or MACH 112 - Lathe II 3 credits
or MECH 120 - Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming I 3 credits

¹ Students advancing on to an associate degree are encouraged to take Technical Drawing with AutoCAD (DRFT 120).
²Students advancing on to an associate degree are encouraged to take Technical Math I (MATH 117).
³ Students advancing on to an associate degree are encouraged to take English I (ENGL 101).
⁴ Program advisor must approve choice of technical emphasis elective from areas of computer programming, electronics, drafting, metrology, and/or manufacturing. Introduction to Microcomputing (COMP 210) or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programming I (MECH 120) is recommended.

The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS)

NIMS is a nonprofit national educational foundation that fosters partnerships between businesses and schools to develop a skilled workforce for the metalworking industry. It serves the needs of the metalworking industry by assisting in the development of skill standards for educational and company training programs. Individual assessments can certify skill competencies that are nationally recognized. NIMS requirements focus on accuracy, consistency, safety, problem solving, teamwork and demonstrated performance. The Machine Tool Technology Certificate at Butler County Community College is directly aligned with the NIMS standards.
